Your home garden can be a place of calm and quiet in your busy life, or just a haven away from the housework. My garden has come alive in the last few years, I have collected a few money saving ideas along the way. Having a nice and productive garden doesn’t have to be expensive. Whether you just have a flower garden or a vegetable garden there are ways to save money and keep your garden affordable. By talking to my gardening friends, I have come up with the following money saving tips you can use in your own garden. If you are really into gardening, now is the best to get yourself ready. Why? You will see.

1. Compost
You don’t need to spend lots of money buying compost because you can make your own. Fall is the ideal time to start your own composting area. You can either purchase a compost bin of some sort or make your own. All you need is a spare bit of ground out of the way, maybe behind the garage or shed and some timber off cuts. I found some plans on the Internet that are easy for any home gardener to follow. It is better if you have 2 bays, one for fresh material and one that is composting. Fall is good because you can start with all of the leaves that land on your lawn and spent vegies such as pumpkins and other plant refuse. Save all of your fresh vegetable scraps and fruit peeling for the compost heap.

2. Mulch
One gardener friend of mine has a great tip to save on watering, she told me to mulch my entire garden to a depth of a few inches. This helps to limit weed growth and also keeps any moisture in the soil as it stops the soil itself from drying out in the hot sun and drying winds. You can use your compost for this or purchase some bark chips or straw. If you know someone with stables and horses, the used straw from the stables is great mulch. Grass clippings can compact and become impervious to rain but if combined with fallen leaves it is a good alternative.

3. Be water wise
The first thing I did when I decided to extend my garden and to have a large vegetable garden was to install a water tank to collect the rain water from my garage and house. You would be surprised how quickly a large tank can fill up, even with little or no rain but the heavy dew that falls at night. I use this water solely for the garden.

4. Grow your own plants
Do you have a favorite plant that you would like to have more off in the garden? One of the fun ways to get more plants is to propagate them yourself. This is also a rewarding task as you have grown something from scratch, be it seeds or a cutting. Some plants that are quite hybridized won’t have fertile seeds but you could grow it from a cutting. Any good gardening book will show you how to make softwood and hardwood cuttings. Different plants will grow from either of these methods. You can also give plants away as gifts to friends and neighbors.

5. Make your own garden products
When I joined my local gardening club, the first talk I went to was about making your own herbicides and pesticides. A cheap way to kill flat leaf weeds is to paint a drop of kerosene in the center on a hot sunny day. This will burn the plant and cause it to die, vinegar also works. To get rid of scale and sooty mold, make a mixture of soapy water and white oil to spray on the infested area. This will suffocate the bugs. Soapy water is also good for getting rid of aphids.

6. Go organic
I try to avoid using expensive chemicals around the yard and have found some really great alternatives. If you attract predator insects to your yard to eat the bad bugs such as aphids, you won’t need to use chemical sprays. And to avoid salts and fertilizers building up in the soil, I like to use seaweed or fish based liquid fertilizers on my garden. A seaweed solution is also good to use when planting out seedlings or any plants really as it helps to prevent root shock.

7. Plant swap
A free way to get more plants for your garden is to swap with your neighbors and friends. You will find that not everyone will grow the same plants as you so if you strike your own plants from cuttings or seed, you can swap for other plants that they grow.

8. Join a gardening club
Another great way to find out more about the plants that grow best in your area is to join the local gardening club or society. There is bound to one near you and even if it only supports say roses or vegetables you will get some fantastic tips from the other members. Some clubs also arrange for tours of gardens you might not otherwise be open to the public.

9. Reuse Your Newspapers
A friend of mine saves all of her newspapers when she wants to start a new raised garden bed or veggie patch. She uses the paper to place over the grass of the lawn as a base for her garden. Lay the papers several sheets thick and then top with good soil, compost and mulch. The paper will rot away in a season and will prevent the grass from ruining your garden bed.

10. End of growing season sales
I always make a point of visiting nurseries at the end of Spring/Summer to search for bargains in gardening tools and plants. Most places will have cheaper tools as it is not the growing season and they are getting ready for new stock. They also may have plants that are past their best but will survive with some tender loving care from you.

 

Are you teen lass? Most girls that I know can’t wait to be able to wear makeup and look older than they are. The main problem is most teenagers don’t know how much they should wear, especially if Mom doesn’t wear much makeup. All they see in magazines is models who have extreme makeup to look good for the cameras or runway. My Mom only ever wore lipstick so I had little idea about other makeup products and how to use them. I have developed these tips to help all young girls with their makeup. Some of these tips I still use now and my skin is looking good with few wrinkles, at least compared to some of my girl friends who slept with makeup on and didn’t use sunscreen.

1. Cleanse
Before applying any makeup products make sure your hands and face are clean. Find a good cleanse that suits your skin type and clean your face well. You can use a mild exfoliating cream or scrub once a week to help keep that acne and blemishes under control.
2. Moisturizer
It is important to start a skin regime early and to get used to cleaning your face properly to avoid as much acne and blemishes as you can. Just because your skin is oily doesn’t mean that you don’t use a moisturizer. One with a light tint can be good if you think your skin is pale looking and want a bit more color and you don’t want to wear a foundation. You should also use a separate sunscreen for your skin type as the one in moisturizers is usually very light protection. It will also help stop those wrinkles that come with aging.

3. What to do
If you want to use makeup but are unsure what will suit your skin type visit a department store with beauty counters. Find a woman whose makeup you like and ask her for tips and products. She will explain what each product does and how you should use it. She will also try some colors on you to find out the best shades for your skin and skin type, be it oily, dry or a combination.
4. Foundation and concealer
Using too much foundation can be bad for your skin as it will block the pores. You don’t even need to use a foundation if you don’t want to. You might just want to use a concealer to cover up any spots or breakouts and uneven skin tone. If you do use a foundation pick one that is a shade lighter than your skin tone. It will look a lot more natural and that is what your aim should be.

If you suffer from oily skin that looks shiny, use a powder instead of a cream. It will look dry and not oily. I suffered from oily skin and found that powder is wonderful. I always carried it in my purse for that quick touch up during the day.

I don’t know about you, but I hate buying a product that says it will do wonders for my skin to turn out to be a waste of my hard earned money. This product sounds great and at $18 a tube would want to be great. It promises lip enhancing effects and long lasting color in a variety of pinks. My lips looked exactly the same and the color wore off in about half an hour. It contains some good products such as Vitamin E which is an antioxidant and moisturizer. It also contains shiny polymers to enhance and add volume to your lips. As I said, my lips stayed exactly the same. They didn’t look enhanced at all. I also found that it had a real chemical smell to it and tasted like it too. Not a very pleasing product at an expensive price.

We all know about those ugly dimpled patches of cellulite we have on our legs and bottom. I tried some creams that said they would smooth the skin out and cover up blemishes such as spider veins and stretch marks. A product from Murad called Firm and Tone Serum was expensive and didn’t match up to the claims it made.

 

This tube comes in at between $60 and $75 depending on where you purchase it from. I tried a few of these cellulite creams and none did much to my skin but this was a pricey one too. This product is supposed to treat cellulite and stretch marks by making your skin more elastic and firmer, thereby decreasing the appearance of cellulite. It is also supposed to hide blemishes and bruises. It did none of this for me. It didn’t cover up any marks on my skin and the appearance of my cellulite on my legs didn’t change at all. And to make it work better, I was to purchase 2 more Murad products. This was getting to be an expensive trial.

I tried some skin tanning creams that promised to give you a beautiful subtle glow. They were all quite expensive but this one not only tanned my skin but tanned my clothes as well. This product from Nars called Body glow did not excite me one bit and it was on the dearer side at $59.

It is very thick and needs to be warmed up to use so it spreads over the skin evenly. I saw it on a model on television and thought how great she looked with just a touch of tan to her skin. I didn’t want to turn orange like some old creams made me turn, just a subtle tan to show off my legs and arms. It was okay to spread over my skin after I had warmed it considerably and I looked alright but then I looked at my dress after I had put it on. All up the short sleeve was light brown streaks. Yes, the tan came off on my clothes. I was not impressed at all.

A friend of mine swears by using facial mists. She loves the way they make her skin feel so I thought I would give some a try. Some smelt nice and refreshing and some felt just like being sprayed with cold water. That is what I thought of Skyn Iceland’s Arctic Face Mist. It felt just like icy water spraying on my face. This mist is supposed to calm my irritated and stressed skin with its mixture of vitamins A, B, C and E. I found that my skin stayed the same as it was before I had sprayed it on. Maybe after prolonged use there might have been some changes but at between $29 and $35 I wasn’t going to find out.

I think these work on your mind to make us feel better and don’t do much for our skin at all. I felt refreshed but my skin still looked the same, hot and blotchy.

I am a great fan of soap free hand washes as I am always washing my hands after gardening and they get very dry. So a soap free choice sounded great. I tried lots of these as they are quite cheaply priced except for one. I found this hand wash from Molton Brown called Naran Ji Fine Liquid hand wash costing between $23 and $39.

This is for a hand wash, not a magical cure for a complaint, and also a hand wash that mostly goes down the drain. Okay it smelt fantastic and came in 5 different scents but for me the price put me off more than anything else. It purported to reduce fine lines on your hands with continual use but didn’t contain any of the usual products like retinol or alpha hydroxy acid that other line reducing products contain. Guess what? I have been using for more than a year, it is no better any soap I used before.

 

I have been trying to save money on food and cooking at home. Food can be so expensive and waste can cost us even more money. I have put together a list of my top ten tips for saving money on cooking. Hope they are helpful for those who didn’t know how to start saving money.

1.     Bulk buying and special offers

When you see products that you use regularly on special and if you have room to store them buy a few extra. This will save you money in the long run as next time you shop you won’t need to buy it. Try saving a few dollars every week and going to a warehouse style supermarket such as Sam’s Club or Costco and stock up on the essentials for your pantry.  Sometimes there are 2 for 1 offer or 3 for the price of 2. And I have even seen “buy one and get something else free” very often. Make sure that they are the products you actually needed. Be aware though, just because it has a sign that says sale, it doesn’t mean that the price has been reduced.

2.     Vouchers and coupons

Whenever you see vouchers or coupons always check to see if you buy the products. This can save you a few dollars each week on the products that you regularly buy. Sometimes when a new product is released there will be a special money back offer, if it is a product that you need, take advantage of this offer.

3.     Plan your meals

If I write up a weekly meal planner and shop according to the plan, I don’t buy things that I won’t use. This saves a lot of wastage at the end of the week, particularly on fresh fruit and vegetables. If you haven’t used it and need to throw it out, it has cost you more money by not using it.

4.     Shopping list

I now make a shopping list every week with all the items I need to buy to cook my planned meals. This means I don’t buy too much of any one item and possibly have to throw it away. Even if you don’t do a meal planner a list means that you won’t impulse buy.

5.     Cheaper brands

I have been trying the cheaper brands and have been quite pleased with the result. As well as saving me some money each week, I have not noticed a taste difference. It is no good buying a cheap brand of something if you don’t like it much anyway. Just try the cheaper brands and you will find that most of them will be as good as the expensive brand. Over a year this could save you hundreds of dollars.

6.     Cheaper cuts of meat

You don’t always need to buy the expensive cuts of meat. Sometimes the cheaper cuts are tastier; they just need a bit longer cooking time. Buy chuck steak or shin beef for those hearty winter casseroles, they will cook for a few hours and the meat will be tasty and so tender. Instead of that expensive roast leg of lamb, buy some lamb shanks; they are so tasty when cooked for a few hours with some root vegetables.

 Buy chicken thighs instead of expensive breast meat. Thigh meat is tastier and juicier and is very quick to cook.

7.     Make your own products

I hadn’t thought of this before but it really makes sense, instead of buying bread and breadcrumbs, save the crusts and make your own breadcrumbs. Keep the crusts in the freezer until you have enough then toast or dry them in the oven, give them a whizz in the blender and free breadcrumbs. If the kids like popsicles, don’ buy them anymore. Buy yourself a Popsicle mold for a few dollars and make the kids healthy ones with fruit and juices or milk and flavoring.

8.     Leftovers

It is really easy to turn leftovers into new meals. If you cook a whole roast chicken, you can get up to 3 meals from it depending on the size of your family. Cook lots of vegies to have with it the first night and have a lovely roast chicken dinner. There will be enough meat left for a couple of sandwiches for lunchtime. If you strip all of the remaining meat from the carcass, make a tasty stir fry that night with some noodles or rice. Leftover pasta can be used in a couple of ways. Fry it up in the pan and add beaten eggs and add some more cheese for a tasty frittata. Make pasta bake with an extra jar of pasta sauce and serve with green vegies.

9.     Seasonal fruit and vegetables

Have you noticed the changing prices of fruit and vegies at the supermarket? If a product suddenly becomes more expensive then it is out of season. Only buy fruit that is in season, not fruit imported from overseas or grown out of season in green houses. This will be a lot more expensive as it is more expensive to grow. Sometimes the choice won’t be that great but you will save dollars every week when you only buy seasonal fruit and vegetables.

10.  Grow your own

I have started a little veggie garden at home. Nothing huge, just a yard or two and some large pots for herbs in my back yard. The kids’ love the idea of growing and eating their own veggies that they helped plant. I have put some herbs in like parsley and basil that are easy to grow and chives. Only plant vegies that will grow in your climate and there is bound to be some that your family likes. I have put in peas and beans; we all love to eat them and some lettuce that grows leaves that you can pick anytime. No waiting for a huge heart to form and have lots of lettuces ready that you won’t be able to eat.

 

I am always looking for ways to save money when I am shopping. One thing that seems to cost more each time I purchase them are ladies razors.  Most women shave some part of their body most of the year. Whether it is your legs and bikini area in summer and under your arms all year round, we all seem to buy razors of some sort nearly every time we go shopping. Some of us also have those annoying hormonal chin and lip whiskers that need to be kept at bay. The easiest way to get rid of body hair is to shave it off. You can choose from an electric razor from a well recognized company like Remington or disposable razors  made by brands such as Gillette, Schick, and BIC. These three companies make over 90% of ladies disposable razors.

Some lady disposable razors have a cartridge that you can change when the blades become blunt while others you just throw the entire razor away and grab another one. You can also choose the number of blades you want from one to 5 and some have a gel or moisturizing strip to give you a closer shave. Whichever one you buy you will have to keep buying all year long. Surely there is a cheaper way to keep ourselves hair free.

Fact 1 – Regardless of the razors, they all do the same job in the same way. It is just the cost that will vary. Razors become more expensive if they have multiple blades and when they have added gel or moisturizing strips. In my experience the razors with the added gel or moisturizer run out of gel before the razors are blunt. This means that I am wasting money buying the gel stripped razor over a disposable razor that hasn’t got a gel strip.

Fact 2 – Always make sure that your razor is dried properly after you have finished shaving. Run it under hot water to remove any hairs and shaving cream from the blades. When it is clean blot the razor on paper towels or tissues until the blade is dry.

Fact 3 – Keep your razor sharp. The barber always strops his razors on a leather strap to keep them nice and sharp. At home you can use an old leather belt or a piece of old denim from a pair of jeans. The denim will also help remove any debris left in the razor. Take your razor and press it lightly onto the denim and move it away from you. This will help it to stay sharp and you might notice some small bits of whiskers coming out that you thought might not have been there.

If you use a razor every day the cost over a year can become large, and like me, I am sure you would like to save some of your hard earned income. There are so many to choose from, made by only a few manufacturing companies. I get overwhelmed by the choice every time I go shopping. So I was looking online and found that Yahoo had a price comparison for ladies razors. It lists hundreds of types of razors from a single razor in a pack to multiple packs, replacement cartridge disposable razors, electric razors and safety razors and their replacement blades. Wouldn’t it be nice to compare prices at home without standing for ages in front of the shelves at the supermarket or pharmacies wondering which brand to buy this week. If you are like me, I forget the name of the last razor I bought or I can’t find the name I bought last time. The manufacturing companies seem to delight in inventing a new name each month or so just to confuse me.

The price of an electric razor varies between $20 and $40. This is not a bad price but if you shave every day, sometime over the course of a year you will need to replace the cartridge head and the foils. These replacement items are generally under $20. So this is probably cheaper than buying disposable or cartridge razors for a year but a lot of ladies I know, including myself, don’t think that they give a close enough shave. These razors are more suited to our legs and underarms than other parts like our faces and bikini lines.

The cheapest option is of course the disposable razors, followed by the razors that have replacement cartridges. The choice is huge as each company makes a selection of each style.

Let’s look at Gillette first with their Daisy and Venus brands. The Classic Daisy disposable razor is a reasonable $8 for a 12 pack which is just cheaper than the 5 pack for $5. You can choose either yellow or pink. The Venus brand name covers a lot of different razors. Some are disposable and others are available as a single razor and then you purchase extra cartridges. The disposable razors are Venus Embrace with a gel strip at $11 for a 3 pack, the Malibu, Tropicana and Oceanic are $9 for a 3 pack. They also produce a sensitive skin variety that is available as a 3 pack for $9 or a 6 pack for $15. So if you have sensitive skin a disposable is more expensive.

Gillette’s disposable cartridge razors come under several different names such as Spa Breeze, Breeze, ProSkin, Divine, Embrace and Original. All of these razors you buy as a single razor and then you purchase extra cartridges as they wear out and become blunt or the gel strip wears out. The cheapest razor is the Venus Original at $9 and cartridges are $12 for a 4 pack. The other single razors are between $9 and $12. A 4 pack of cartridges can cost you between $13 and $16.  The Venus Divine on the other hand is more expensive to buy and replace the cartridges at $21 for an 8 pack. All of these Gillette razors have multiple blades and some sort of shaving strip of gel so that all you do is wet the area, no need for any soap or shaving cream.

The Schick razors have a smaller range to choose from but are a similar price. Their disposable 3 pack of Comfort Plus that has a gel strip is going to cost you $6.50 and the Extreme 3 with 4 blades of the Quattro disposable razor is a 4 pack for the same price. It just shows that within the same brand we can save a few dollars just by comparing quantities. The popular Schick Quattro has 4 blades for a close smooth cut.

The BIC ladies razors are the cheapest of the disposables. A 12 pack of Lady Shavers is under $4.This is by far the cheapest ladies shaver on the market today. There is no moisturizing gel or strip just a single blade to do the job.

These razors can end up costing us girls a fortune over the period of a year even if we don’t shave every day. Here are some tips to save.

Money Saving Tip 1 – It is better to buy a bulk pack of whatever your favorite brand and razor is as this will be cheaper than buying a smaller pack more often.

Money Saving Tip 2 – The other way to save a few dollars is to buy the basic razor that has no gel or moisturizing strip as all this does it put up the price.

Money Saving Tip 3 – Razors with replaceable blades are more cost effective than the single or twin bladed disposable razors, and earth-friendly too.

Money Saving Tip 4 – The most cost effective way for all of us ladies to shave is to buy an ordinary safety razor. Probably like the one that your Dad or Granddad used to have.

You will only need to buy the razor once in a lifetime unless it is accidentally broken or the top piece is lost. Although this is dearer than one of the razors that you can buy replacement cartridges for it should not need to be replaced. It is a lot more hard wearing and made of steel so it much harder to break even if you tread on it for example. The blades are so reasonable too, just $10 for one hundred blades. If you look after the blade and take it out and clean it properly each time you shave, a single blade will last for a few weeks.

Remember those design your own cover web sites I was telling you about? I found two that let you upload a photo or picture and they will make you a very unique and individual case for your iPhone 5. It can be any photo, just follow the link to the  “customize your own case”, follow the simple instructions and delivered right to your door will be the one and only iPhone case like it in existence. You will have a very uncommon and rare iPhone case and be the envy of your girl friends.

This is one of the great customize your own case web sites, go to the customize page at skinit.com . Of course I can’t show you one of these customized iPhone cases; you will need to make your own but there was so much to choose from here. Just upload a photo and you can add text and shapes and you have a custom made design.

Skinit.com also has a huge range of different ready-to-ship cases to choose from. If you can think of a category they probably will have it. Metal cases, silicone cases, whatever you like best. They also have a list of artists to choose from and a lot of styles of art too. They have Asian art, fantasy art, fine art, tattoo art, skull art, inspirational themes, vintage art and urban art. I found lots of photographs to choose from too, of animals, nature and flowers; lots of different colors and patterns; funny cases and cartoon cases. What I thought most unusual though were the etched metal cases below in different colors to choose from.

Here is just a small selection that I found. These are really gorgeous and different from those every day cases you see on a lot of iPhones. There are swirls and patterns and Japanese style scenes like the blue and silver case has on it. This is possibly my favorite so far. One of the lovely artist designs is this amazing blue butterfly. It could be a magical tattoo but what a great and unusual iPhone 5 cover it makes. There were hundreds of stunning designs to choose from. I could hardly decide which unusual one to include, so many were different span any I had seen before.

The other web site that has lots of designs to choose from and lets you customize your iPhone 5 case is Zagg.com. Same simple instructions to follow, just find the link to customize your case and you are nearly finished. I found some wonderful designs to choose from here that can be quite an individual statement. They had designs made in leather that look like a sporting ball; choose from football, basketball or baseball or a leather case with a snakeskin pattern or crocodile skin pattern. And of course they had plain dyed leather too in a range of great earthy colors. But much more girly were the whimsical animal designs like the one pictured. It is called “Bee wildered” and shows a gorgeous Siamese cat with a bee sitting on its nose in among the flowers.

There were lots of other designs to choose from. There were lots of animals including, cats, dogs, fish, frogs, tigers and penguins to name just a few. Most had one or two different color combinations to choose from. And for something a bit stylish what about the Taj Mahal, or Eiffel tower on your phone case. There are a lot of pictures of sites and famous landmarks from around the world to choose from as well as landscapes and nature designs. You can also have your high school emblem or college mascot on a case or one of the great range of solid colors.

Zagg.com is a bit different from the others as you could purchase a skin only, or add a screen protector altogether. The range of skins is enormous and you could match screens to go with your cases.

I found metal cases, leather cases, rubber skins and silicone skins and lots of different colors and designs. Some are purely decorative, but also protect, like the Woogie and others you won’t want to keep in your pocket. There are hundreds if not thousands of designs by artists, designs of art, and photographic cases of landscapes, nature and animals. You can have your favorite football, baseball or basketball team, the college you studied at, your high school or colorful designs and patterns. There are so many cases to choose from, you will spend hours (like I did) searching for something a bit different that will make your iPhone into a fashion statement. So just visit one of these great web sites and start looking for your ideal iPhone 5 case.

 

Halloween, all kids’ favorite holiday, is just two weeks away. I haven’t been trick and treat for about 20 years. Don’t you love money? I think it is more important to teach our kids about handling money as they will become better savers if you teach them from a young age. They need to know about saving, spending, budgeting, investing and borrowing as they get older. I started teaching my kids about money when they started to count. Once they knew their numbers from one to ten we started looking at money. The coins first as they could play around with them and use them to count out loud. I have made a list of my twenty top ideas so you can teach your kids at home about money and what it means.

1.     Introduce them to money

Money isn’t evil, nor angel. There is nothing to be ashamed if you love money very much. Money is just one of tools you needed for your life. You need it for a better life. But it isn’t the measure of how success or how happy of your life.

2.     Teach them to about saving some each money each week

As my kids learned about the concept of money, I gave them a small allowance each week for doing little jobs around the house. They had to put their dirty clothes in the laundry basket and tidy up their rooms when asked. I would put two dollars in a money box for them every week. After a couple of months we took the money out and counted it. I told them how much they had and then we went to the shops. I told them they could each buy something out of their money, but they had to be sure it was something that they really wanted or needed as the money would go as soon as they spent it. Both of them bought a small toy. The next time I went shopping they wanted to buy a toy again. I explained to them that the money was gone and they would have to save up again. This was a bit of a shock; there wasn’t enough money this week to go shopping. I explained to them how saving money worked. That if they didn’t spend it all every week they could buy something bigger and better in a few months. This was the start of them saving money, hopefully for a lifetime. They each found something they would like to buy that was a few months worth of allowance and they saved all their allowance each week.

3.     Do I need that toy or do I want it? Saving and spending

As each year passed and my kids learned about saving for something bigger, I started talking to them about whether they needed it or merely wanted to have it. This made them think about what they would spend their savings on. I took them shopping with me and pointed out several things that I wanted to buy for myself. I found a really nice sweater, but I had already bought some new ones and didn’t need another one. I said mom would like that but mom doesn’t need another sweater. I said I would save that money because what Mom needed were some new curtains in the lounge room. I bought myself a money box and put the money for the sweater in it. I showed them that Mom was a saver too. In a few months we went and bought new curtains.

4.     Open a bank account

I took both of my kids to the bank and opened an account for them. Each week they could choose to bank all or some of their allowance. I did tell them that I expected some money to be banked each week. This gave them another record of how the money would add up if it wasn’t touched. They were also excited about earning some interest on the saved money. To them it was like money for nothing.

5.     Set a reachable savings goal

I made each child decide on an amount to save over a set period of time. They could do extra jobs around the house and yard that they would get paid for. It wasn’t long before they started to see the money grow.

6.     Set money boundaries

I explained to each child that I would pay for some things for them, such as a family outing but if they wanted to go to the movies with their friends that they would be expected to pay. They then had the choice themselves of what to save for and when to spend.

7.     Teach them about change

I told my kids that they would get change when buying an item. They would rarely have the exact amount with them. Teach them to work out the change from say a $5 note for something worth $3.75. This makes them aware of always getting the correct change when shopping. People can sometimes count out the change incorrectly. You want to always get the correct change from a purchase.

8.     Explain a budget

As my kids got older I explained to them about making a budget so they could save and still have some money to spend when out with their friends. I showed them the family budget and how we put money aside for the mortgage each month and the electricity and gas bills. They each decided on a budget for themselves and would save some money they earned each week. No real goals here, just the point of saving some of their hard earned money.

9.     Earning money can be hard work

To earn money, you need to work, and work hard. No one is just going to give you money for turning up. I suggested they ask the neighbors about washing their cars or mowing lawns for a reasonable fee. The harder they worked each weekend, the more money they would earn.

10.  Keeping records

As well as budgeting, I got them to keep a record of how much they spent each week and how much they saved. After a few weeks we looked at it to see how they had spent their money and if there was a way to save a bit more each week. Reminding them about college and cars helped. Both wanted to learn to drive and eventually buy their own car, this gave them an insight into how to spend wisely and save better.

11.  Value for money

Teach kids about value for money. When you go food shopping take them with you and explain about buying in bulk and looking for specials on the products you usually buy. Sometimes buying the larger amount is not cheaper than buying two smaller quantities of the same product.

12.  Research their costly purchases

I encouraged my children to look around for the best price on an item. If they wanted an MP3 player or an iPhone for example, I got them to go to more than one store and compare prices. Maybe one shop was a bit dearer but you got more with that purchase, a free case, or iTunes card for example.

13.  Impulse buying

Try to stop impulse buying. This will cost them money in the long run. Make them wait a few weeks before the latest gadget or DVD. Things always get cheaper the longer they have been for sale.

14.  Credit cards are not a good option

I taught my kids about credit cards and explained how they work. Yes you can buy whatever you want, but you are not using your money, it is the banks money and they will want it back. If you can’t afford to use your money it is not always a good idea to use the banks. They will charge you interest, but it will be more than they will give you for your savings. I sat down with them and worked out how long it would take to pay back for the bank $100, and how much interest they would pay.

15.  Loans can help you buy more expensive items

The kids know we have a mortgage on the house and we pay it back every month. Loans can be a helpful device for buying cars and houses as you might never be able to save that amount of money, no matter how hard you work. Teach them to shop around for the best deal interest wise. Don’t accept the first offer you see, a better one could be around the corner. Always use a reputable bank or credit union for a loan and help them with a new budget to pay the loan back.

16.  Charitable donations

I taught my kids about people who need extra to help them get through life. Not all people are as fortunate as them. They may have been born with a disability such as blindness and need help to live life to the full. It is always nice to be able to help someone worse off then you are. You can’t help everyone but choose a favorite and try to donate something each year. It doesn’t always have to be money. They could donate their clothes or books to a charity to sell or give away.

17.  Paying taxes

We all hate the tax man don’t we? We work hard and he wants his cut of our money. Unfortunately taxes are here for our lifetime. The government uses our tax money to fund various departments to provide us with services like roads and water. I recommend that they always put a bit extra aside just in case your 1040 form comes out with surprises. This is really important if you have changed jobs or had an extra job for a while.

18.  Budget for a holiday or large purchase

I also taught my kids about as budgeting for a holiday as well as their weekly or monthly budget. Holidays can be costly as you still have the same expenses at home on top of the cost of your holiday. It is like living in two places for a month. I opened another savings account that earned more interest if I made regular deposits and didn’t touch it for 12 months. Just a few dollars each week can make a huge difference to the price of a holiday, fridge or washing machine.

19.  Investing money for the future

Each time my kids had saved a few hundred dollars we looked at buying bonds or putting it into a different account that accrued a higher interest rate over a longer period of time. This is an investment account that will grow by itself to a certain extent and grow even faster the more money you add to it.

20.  Set your kids a good example

Above all, teach your kids about saving by setting a good example and saving money too. Show them your budget for the household and how you mange to save for a holiday. This will show them a budget in action.

 

This morning I was reading the article, Make Money While Unemployed, from Yahoo. The only thing I would agree is to apply for unemployment benefits. All other tips will probably get you unemployed forever. Why? Let me tell you what I thought.

Write for e-commerce sites? Do you know the average price of 1000 words article? $5! Just think how many words you can write everyday. Besides, the competition will come from India, Pakistan, and many other countries where people speak English. It can drive the price as low as $2 per 1000 words sometimes, depending on what types of articles you are writing.

Dog walker? Do you think you can get it easily? Every family who need a dog walker may have hired one. Why would they hire you? You may find one from your neighbor or your friends. It is no different from begging for a few dollars from them.

Sell on eBay? Don’t waste your time. If you want to sell your own household items, try a garage sale first. If you want to buy low and sell high and if you are new to this business, prepare to lose money in the beginning.

Odd job from Craigslist? Not to mention many how you can find in your city, just tell me what you can do. Maybe mowing a lawn, moving a furniture, painting a door? What else? Everybody can do that. Are you going to live with it in the future? If you are, go ahead. If not, read on.

People lose their jobs everyday, including me. You may become angry and frustrated in the first couple of days. After you calm down, please think:
1. What are you good at?
2. What do you want to do in the future?
3. What do I miss?
Losing a job isn’t the end of the world. Most people actually find a better job or establish their own businesses after losing their jobs. Think it as a change of your life, or an opportunity of your life. I have been shopping online from my comfy couch and have found some clothes to suit every body shape. Not all current trends and styles suit everyone, you need to find what style suits your body shape and makes you look and feel good this Fall. Whether you are petite or full figured there is something special to be found online. We all like to look good and we need to find a style that flatters our figures. We aren’t all super models so don’t expect super model clothes to suit you. I have found some great fashion ideas for everyone. I found some great BoHo or Bohemian clothes at ShopTheTrendBoutique.com. This style of clothing looks great on anyone who is apple shaped. These dresses help hide your tummy and give the appearance of longer legs with the flowing patterned fabric. Stay away from big bold prints but a subtle all over floral motif with some colored vertical stripes will look great. If you are apple shaped don’t choose anything that has a dropped waist detail or pulls in at the waist with a belt as this will only emphasize your tummy. A belt also cuts you in half and can make you look shorter. You want something to elongate you. There is also a great range under maxi dresses at shopbop.com.

If you have a pear shape body with larger hips and backside you’ll want something to take the eyes away from the hip area. This fall why not take advantage of a great jacket with a big collar of some faux fur detail at shoulder height. I found the following jacket at shopbop.com. The large collar and faux fur draws the eyes up to the shoulder area without lingering on the hips.

Leave this jacket undone and let it flow around and past your hips. Also look for a wide, long jacket shape that will lengthen your look. If you are pear shaped you will want to avoid any of the current peplum trend as this style emphasizes the waist to hip curve and will make your backside and hips huge. A structured jacket falling below the waist would be a great look over a pair of wide leg pants. No need for dark colors either, but choose any bold patterns with large shapes. And like the pear shaped body don’t go for the peplum look either as it will only emphasize your curves or make them appear bigger.

For those lucky girls with an hourglass shape you want to emphasize your waist. The new fashion sheath style dress that hugs your waist or a straighter style dress with a belt is perfect. Team it with a short jacket and you are set for fall. I found this great belted dress at shopbop.com.

There was a great range of dresses at ShopTheTrendBoutique.com as well. A real no no for the hourglass figure is a BoHo style dress. Your lovely small waist will get lost in the flowing fabric. Maybe a short BoHo style to wear to the beach or pool would be great.

If you are tall and thin, the new peplum will emphasize your waist to hip area and make you curvier. The accented hip area gives you a more hourglass shape by putting curves on your body. You should avoid all flowing styles of dresses like the BoHo collections as you will get lost just like a woman with an hour glass figure. You should also avoid most military style clothing as you will look tall and straight with no curves to be seen.

All of us need to avoid certain styles because they make us look to curvy and chubby or too tall and thin. Do you know about worst fashion? I have been shopping for some new clothes for the coming Fall season and I have found some shocking clothes. Specifically, I was after a dress to wear to a wedding that I could also wear on other occasions. I was after simple and elegant with no frills or overlay fabrics.

Do you have an experience of online shopping? Yes, I have been online shopping from my comfy couch and have visited different stores web sites. The ones I have visited include macys.com, jcpenny.com, Nordstrom.com and landsend.com.  I have seen some beautiful clothes but I have also seen some dreadful clothes. I would not be seen inside or outside my home in them.

I was looking for a nice unassuming dress or outfit for the warmer Fall weather. I didn’t want anything fussy or that I would need to dry clean and something I could see myself wearing to other outings not just my friend’s wedding. I wanted a plain but fashionable, wearable dress and came upon this creation from jcpenny.com.

This was listed as a mother of the bride dress or as a brides dress. It is so fussy; can you imagine trying to keep it looking nice on a warm Fall day? All of those frilly bits would drive me mad. I don’t think I would ever wear it to a wedding or anything else for that matter. It reminds me of a dressing gown. One of those chenille ones with all the lines running across it like my Granny used to wear.

There were several other dresses, one was an off the shoulder but only on one side. It looked a bit like a togas from Roman times and I could not see myself wearing it either.

Next I tried Nordstrom.com to see what sort of outfit or dress I could find. I came across a pair of checked flared slacks. Not sure who was going to wear them but I certainly wasn’t. I was thinking of maybe a nice pair of slacks and a cool top but these were not my style. I am not sure who would like them. I think checks are great on comfy flannel shirts for winter but not a pair of slacks for Fall.

I then noticed these new jeans that are coated. Some are coated to look like leather and there was one pair that looked the legs was wrapped in tin foil. Not a good look for this fall at all.

These jeans are all bunched up over her shoes and look uncomfortable. Maybe I could find a shirt to match and go as the Tin Man.

Sometimes I think new fashion is only made for the models because the average person is not going to wear it. Take the cut out styles for instance. I put all cut out clothing into a worst fashion list. This dress from Nordstrom was quite nice till I noticed it had cut outs at the top of the arms. It was a nice color and my style but for the cut out bits. Was there not enough material to finish it off? This is what I think of every time I see cut out clothing.

It even looks a bit matronly except for the cut outs. Not sure I would even like it with full sleeves.

Next shop on my list was macys.com. I was hopeful I could find something nice in fall fashion here. I was assailed by stripes. Not small subtle stripes, no wide bold stripes, like you see on toddlers jumpers.

This is a sweater dress and if I want to wear a sweater I usually wear it with slacks or jeans, not as a below the knee dress. There were short sweater dresses in bold colors again like your little cousin would wear when he was 3 years old. There were lots of dresses but the worst ones stood out over the better ones.

 

Well, my last stop for this shopping expedition was landsend.com. I was hopeful that I could find something nice here not just stand out worst designs. Maybe I am being picky but some of the new fashion for fall is not to my liking at all. I don’t mind bold colors but some of these are way out there.

I am not sure I will be able to find a nice outfit after all. I have been checking out landsend.com for a dress and all that has stood out again are worst fall fashion ideas. I have seen some nice clothes but the only ones that jump out of the page at me fall into the worst category. More check skirts and slacks but the one dress that stood out as worst fashion was this paprika colored number.

This was too boring for the fall season. I would look like a fallen leaf myself. This is such a dull color for clothes I don’t know why anyone would want a dress in it.

The fashion industry needs to take a good look at what fits the average person and choose nice colors for the designs. The worst fall fashions are either far too bold or shiny such as the metallic jeans or too bold with wide stripes that only look good on little boys less than 5 years old. Some of the fall fashions look good on the models but not everyone looks like a fashion model. The dresses are clingy and form fitted that is not going to suit a lot of women and do you no justice at all. The fuller figure dresses are a big like tents again with a belted waist. These fashions just cut you in half unless you are tall and slender and the size of a model.

This web site also had lots of fabric and felt to buy for crafts too. With just a little imagination Mum can help make some little puppets and do felt craft as well. Help your little girl learn to sew her own pretty little items. There were lots of different kits at less than $10. They even had specific jewelry beading kits too. I bought one to make some pretty blue metal flowers that could be used as a decoration or even ear rings or a necklace. These jewelry kits were less than $10 and that little girl can say look at what I have made.

There are lots of things little girls can make with very little experience needed. There is also a great collection of decorated journals for every little girl to write her secrets in. These have some lovely colorful covers with paisley patterns and spots. There are also some with nature themed covers with animals and plant life on them. Are you going to buy skin products at affordable price? As we age we need to look after our skin in different ways. The skin care regime I used in my 20’s will be very different from what I need as I age. There are a myriad of products on the market and not all are expensive. Some can be as little as $20 or less, made by very well known companies. We all need to moisturize our skin and look after it to prevent skin damage and wrinkles. There are day creams, night creams, eye creams and treatments, anti-aging facial cleansers and toners, anti-aging facial masks to minimize wrinkles and anti-aging sunscreen to protect you when out and about. There are also anti-aging skin care tools; one is the Clarisonic cleansing system by Pacific Bioscience Laboratories.

As we age the production of collagen slows down, so most anti-aging skin care products contain elements to increase the skins production of collagen. Exposure to the sun over the years can cause loss of collagen. All anti-aging skin care products contain antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, peptides and Retinol. All of these chemicals can be present or a combination of them. There are several products available that are inexpensive that those on the lowest budget can afford to have good skin care regime.

Antioxidants such as green tea or more commonly Vitamin E are found in most anti-aging moisturisers.  Antioxidants are there to help halt any sun damage that has been caused by exposure to the sun. Sun damage and age slow the production of collagen. With the use of antioxidants in moisturisers and eye treatments they aim to prevent new wrinkles from forming by boosting collagen production. An example is Eucerin sensitive skin Q10 anti wrinkle moisturizer. It contains vitamin E as an antioxidant and is less than $12. This is a great product at this price. The vitamin E gives my skin a dose of moisturizer while looking after my sensitive skin.

Another product found in anti-aging moisturisers is hyaluronic acid. This helps your skin retain moisture and plumps the skin under the wrinkles. This is found in Garnier’s BB cream skin renew. For less than $13 this moisturiser is also tinted and acts as a sun screen. It also contains vitamin C. This is great for when I want a little extra color but don’t want to use a heavy foundation during the day.

Products called peptides are also found in anti-aging moisturisers. This has been found to help heal wounds and increase the production of collagen. There is a product called L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Hydra-nutrition advanced skin repair serum. It is under $20 and contains biopeptides that help to create a barrier to the elements of sun and weather exposure. I use this when I am out gardening or going to the beach when I want a bit more sun protection.

A great anti-aging eye treatment by Garnier contains another product beneficial to aging skin. It is retinol which is a vitamin A. This can be found in most skin care products. It exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells and revealing fresh skin underneath. Garnier anti-wrinkle eye roller is under $17 and reduces crow’s feet and puffiness around the eyes. It is best stored in the fridge, the coolness is refreshing. I found this to be a great product from a well known company. It is refreshing to use especially on warm weather or after the beach. Retinol halts the production of certain compounds that break down collagen. It is a proven treatment in treating aging skin.

An anti-aging facial mask is a good addition to your skin care regime. An inexpensive one at under $4 is made by Freeman. It is called Facial enzyme mask and contains pineapple extract and vitamin C. These are best used once or twice a week to refresh and tighten your facial skin. This mask leaves my skin feeling smooth and fresh. It is a fantastic price too. I haven’t found many good products at less than $5 but this is one I use all the time.

Most anti-aging sunscreen products are contained in moisturisers. An inexpensive cream is made by Olay Total effects. It is called 7 in 1 plus a touch of sun. It helps control fine lines and wrinkles while providing a sun screen as well. It is less than $19 and also contains an exfoliating agent called beta-hydroxy acid. I find this to be another great product from a well known company. I find Olay products great value for money and this is one of them.

A good anti-aging facial cleanser for less than $8 is made by Neutrogena called Ageless restoration. It has micro beads which help to remove dead skin cells and leave your skin feeling fresh and clean. I find this to be a great cleanser as it removes all traces of make up as well. The little beads feel like little massage balls as you massage this cleanser into your skin.

A good anti-aging night treatment is also a good addition to my skin care regime. Look for one with retinol as this works while you sleep.

You can spend a lot of money on skin care but I have found with a little looking around I can find a good range of anti-aging moisturizers and other anti-aging skin care products under $20. You don’t have to stores, just sit in front of a computer and do your research online. I look for products that contain antioxidants such as Vitamin E and Vitamin C and either peptides or retinol. The best also contain hyaluronic acids as well. These all help to promote the skin to produce to collagen which plumps up the skin and lessens the look of wrinkles. If you can find a range of products that suit your skin you can limit the looks of aging as I have done and it hasn’t cost me a fortune.

 

Life is not easy. You don’t realize that when you were young. After you got into college, you started to pay your credit card bill and maybe your apartment rent, and you started to realize that it was up to you to manage the money. Tell me the money traps you have encountered. Maybe a hair specialist, an orthodontist, a vet, an appliance salesman? Who is the worst? In my experience, an auto mechanic is the worst one. Everybody knows that you can’t listen to what auto mechanics tell you. It is common sense that all they said to you is just to make you spend more money while they can make some extra commissions out of it. But I still got fooled sometimes.

Here is the story. I went to Car Spa last Friday to get a car detailing for my Audi Q7. I usually do this once a year. Every time I would choose the most expensive service at $129.99, which is not bad at all. I have tried a few other stores, such as Kwik Kar Lube and Wash, it will cost $169 for full service. See, here is the catch: they attract you by some good deal, and then sell you something you don’t need. Every time I came in, the service man will approach and ask me what I need. I will tell him I need a car detailing, full service. He will recommend something else and I will say no without any hesitate. This works fine in the past few years.

But it was all different that Friday. After the service man walked away, someone else came to me. He claimed that he is the manager, and since I was a loyal customer he will personally issue me a discount on a scratch repair. The normal price is $250, but he will give me a $50 discount. I thought about it for a second or two. Then he sat down next to me, explain to me that this is their newest technology, and no other auto repair shop can provide such a low price. I know there are a few tiny scratches on both of my passenger doors. But they are too small to tell. The biggest scratch is on the back door, which is hit by my garage door. I asked him if he saw the big scratch on the back, he said sure. And he told me it would at least cost me $600 to fix it if I take it to Audi or other body repair shop. I stood up and wanted to show him where the big scratch is. I wanted to confirm that he saw that and can fix that. But right at that moment, the previous service man came to me asking me to do some paper work. After I was done, the manager was gone. I didn’t think it twice. I sat down and continued to read news from my iPhone.

A hour later, I was told my car was ready. Now you know what had happened. The big scratch is still there! I found the manager and tried to get an explanation from him. This is what he told me: this is not a scratch, this is a dent. We do not fix dent since we do not have the matching paint. Can you tell me what is difference between a scratch and a dent? See the picture below. Tell me about it! We have argued a few minutes before I decided to take off. The money has already been paid. If argued a hour longer, maybe I will get some of my money back. But it is already time to pick up my kids from school.

This is another lesson that I should never listen to any auto repair guy. Don’t trust “the new technology”, nor any other terms I don’t understand. Another lesson, don’t pay in advance before you see the result! Once the money is out of your pocket, it is hard to get it back.

What is Hair Made Of?

Hair is made up of the protein Keratin.  There are three layers in each strand of hair.
