I came to the United States as a very young girl from Great Britain. My dad moved here for work, and as soon as he was settled, the whole family followed along. Even though I was quite young, it was a bit hard to adjust at first. I missed my friends and family back home, and we moved from a quiet town into a big bustling city. I adapted quickly and annual visits back to England helped us all maintain a connection to "home." I did become an American citizen in my early teens, and I lost my accent going to school here in the States. I even married a New Englander, so you could say I've adopted the life of my adopted country. But I still miss things about England. I still go back as often as I can with my children. I think it's important that they know where their mom came from and the traditions and all that. For me, it brings back fond memories and keeps me connected to my roots.
