My grandma got her ears pierced when she was 63 years old. She was an immigrant who moved with her very conservative family from Poland to the United States as a young child. Besides the fact that they could never afford a pair of earrings, it was unheard of to pierce any part of the body. It was considered "unholy" to add extra holes.
Grandma had six kids, four were girls. They, too, never got their ears pierced. My mom always wore "screw-in" earrings, which to me seemed more painful than worth how they looked. When I was 16, I got my ears pierced without my parents' permission. They were furious. I didn't care. I loved it. I had always loved it. I grew up down the street from a French family: their little girl always had these sweet little earrings-it was more culturally acceptable, and I wished that my family had the same aesthetic.
They didn't, but when I had my first daughter, I realized, I could make my own choices. We waited until she was two years old. She wore 14-karat gold posts to better ensure no infection. It's been great because family and friends can gift her with jewelry. Someone recommended LoveIvy.com, which carries beautiful pieces for babies and small children. I've referred others there for necklaces and especially screw-back earrings. Their selections are adorable, but I feel a little ripped off by their prices. A $60 pair of silver ladybug earrings seems excessive in price.
