Halloween is still months away but my kids start thinking about their next costume all year. They are young, ages eight and five. They are still in the phase of wanting to be characters from movies they love. It's so funny because in my neighborhood, you'll see tons of kids all wearing the same costume-and none of them are scary. When we were growing up, we always made our own costumes. We used old clothes lying around the house and our mom's make-up. Once in a while, we'd go to the Goodwill store and buy a special second-hand dress if the costume called for it. Nowadays, it's almost expected that kids go to the costume shop or order something online. The problem I have with that is many. For one, you spend too much money on something worn only for one day. Second, the materials that these outfits are made with are itchy and uncomfortable, or fall apart or tear very easily. Third, the masks are usually made of latex, which my son is allergic to. I'm don't want to be bah-hum-bug about this topic, so I try to find positive solutions to keep me and my kids happy. One site, CostumeSuperCenter.com has one alternative that I really like. They make masks that are felt. This way there's no plastic or latex on my child's face. Their prices are really good compared to other outlets. From an adult perspective, I find some of their "celebrity" masks and wigs hilarious.
